Two weeks after our summer holidays, we went on an exciting trip to Canterbury, filled with history, beautiful landscapes, and unforgettable memories.

Monday: Dover Castle and the Chalk Cliffs

On Monday morning, we visited Dover Castle, one of England’s most historic castles on the south-east coast. We explored the garden and the castle itself and we were very impressed by this historic place. The guides in the castle told us a lot of stories, we did not know before, so we learned something about the history of the castle and the importance it held for the country. In the afternoon, we hiked along the famous Chalk Cliffs of Dover, enjoying the countryside in perfect sunny weather.

Canterbury Cathedral

On Monday evening we visited Canterbury Cathedral. It is an impressive building filled with a lot of stunning architecture. We had the great opportunity to join an Even Song there, so we could learn about the differences between the German and the English religion.

Tuesday: Ramsgate Tunnels and Aviation Museum

Tuesday began with a tour of the Ramsgate Tunnels where thousands of people sought shelter during World War II air raids. The tunnels gave us a little insight into what life was like during the Blitz. In the afternoon, we visited the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum, learning about the Royal Air Force. They also showed us some plane and gun models from historic planes like the Spitfire which they used in the second World War.

Wednesday: Hever Castle
On Wednesday we all went to Hever Castle, the family residence of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII. The castle had a very nice garden, which we had time to enjoy. Inside the castle, we were also able to listen to an audio tour about the castle’s history.

Thursday: Canterbury Day
Thursday began with a city tour through the historic districts of Canterbury, where we saw the King’s School and learned about the history of Canterbury Cathedral. After the tour, we had plenty of time to spend the day in Canterbury, shopping and preparing for the long bus ride home. In the late afternoon, we all gathered at the bus to start our journey back home.
